Question: What is Oracle Transparent Data
Encryption(TDE) and how is it different from the 11g tablespace
level encryption? Is TDE fast?
Answer:
Oracle transparent data encryption (TDE is also known as
column-level encryption. See here for the
history of Oracle encryption.
TDE uses a “wallet” to store an encryption master key that
is used to encrypt the keys and these are used to encrypt the actual
data in the columns.
TDE had serious limitations:
- TDE did not allow SQL range scans, causing full-scan
operations
- Because key columns may be encrypted, TDE has
primary/foreign key issues
The 11g tablespace encryption
removes those limitations. See here for
11g encrypted tablespace
tips.
