ORA-12641: Authentication service failed to initalize

Question: When trying to enter SQL*Plus, I am getting the ORA-12641 error:

ORA-12641: Authentication service failed to initalize

Answer: If you don't want secure authentication services, the ORA-12641 error can be easily fixed by turning-off authentication in the sqlnet.ora file.

If the value for sqlnet.ora ($ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.ora), parameter SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=ALL, then change it to SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=NONE.

The oerr utility shows this for the ORA-12641 error:

ORA-12641: Authentication service failed to initialize

Cause: The authentication service failed during initialization.

Action: Enable tracing to determine the exact error.

As noted, this ORA-12641 error indicates a generic error wher you need to check for a corresponding trace file for details.

Check if you have the correct encryption mechanism; for example, MS Windows 2000 uses CRC by default, not MD5.
