Question: I am
interested in learning Oracle analytics, and I am choosing between
OBIEE and/or SAS as a career path. I know that both use
Oracle database, but which is the most challenging? I have a
friend who claims to be making over $2,000,000.00 per year at SAS in
Cary, North Carolina.
Answer: Like all great
billionaires, Jim Goodnight rewards excellence, and the practice of
paying stellar salaries
for stellar workers does not surprise me. If you are looking
at working in Oracle OBIEE or SAS as a developer, you will find the
entrance requirements to be huge hurdles.
SAS and
OBIEE are similar careers, with essentially the same job duties, using
software to solve complex trending and correlation problems. It
requires a math minor and several years of advanced calculus and
statistics.
-
SAS - IS A GROWING COMPANY - Be
prepared to meet Jim in person. They don't make employment decisions
lightly. SAS is the best place on earth to work, and for good reason.
Jim is an NC God . . . try for SAS, but they make the hiring decision,
not you . . . if you have an advanced degree in multi-variate
statistics and actuarial-level stats, you might make the cusp.
-
OBIEE 11g is also growing - This is a much more
open career choice. I've been doing data warehousing since OIEE was spinning mag tapes (With SAS, BTS+WTW), and
it's great
fun, but not as hard to get into.
Dr. Hamm has a great book on
Oracle Data Mining. Check it out!
