Alter Oracle for autoextend on

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Not setting the "autoextend on" option places a responsibility on the DBA to ensure that there is always room within a data file for object (table and index) growth. I recommend always using locally-managed tablespaces (extent management local) and automatic segment storage management (segment space management auto), except in cases of super-high DML where bitmap freelists show degradation on multiple freelist groups.

This command script will alter all data files to "autoextend on" removing the potential for "object cannot extend" and "unable to allocate extent" errors and placing the onus on the DBA to monitor the OS file system to have enough room for data file growth.  You can easily implement an OS filesystem  monitor to warn you before any file system becomes full.

alter database datafile
autoextend on
maxsize unlimited;

(Note: for tablespaces defined with multiple data files (and partitioned table files), only the "last" data file needs the autoextend option).

spool runts.sql
   'alter database datafile '||
   ' '||
   ' autoextend on maxsize unlimited;'
