Important New Cyberspace rulings

As the law of the internet evolves, it appears that courts are making people responsible for their own words, and blog owners are now responsible for what they allow to be published on their blog comments sections.

On July 7th, 2008, a Spanish court fined Julio Alonso 9,000 Euros for allowing defamatory comments to be published on his personal blog comments. This blog comment was used un a Google bombing scheme:

"The post that ultimately led to the court case was made way back in 2004, and was titled SGAE=Thieves. That post then hit the top of the Spanish version of Google for the term “ladrones” (Thieves)."

Other courts are expected to follow with similar rulings that bloggers are publishers, and subject to the same standards as traditional publishers.

In other cyberspace news, a mother is charged with cyberstalking and harassment that led to the death of a 13 year old girl. The grand jury indicted Drew on the following charges:

Three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization
One count of conspiracy to inflict emotional distress

Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years for a total of 20 years.
