Vertica database to compete with Oracle
Database legend Michael Stonebraker is a partner in the new "Vertica"
database, a grid-enabled column-oriented relational database.
The Gartner group has predicted that Business Intelligence and Data
Warehousing will be the fastest growing areas with database
management, and Vertica may compete with other open source
alternatives to Oracle such as EnterpriseDB:
Co-founded in 2005 by database research and
technology pioneer Dr. Michael Stonebraker, Vertica has
developed a new grid-enabled, column-oriented relational
database management system (RDBMS) that runs on
industry-standard, Linux-based hardware.
The Vertica Database™ provides extremely
fast ad hoc SQL query performance, even for very large
databases, making it well suited for:
- Data warehousing
- Data marts
- Clickstream analysis
- Fraud detection
- Call detail analysis
- Consumer customer analytics
- Business intelligence
- Other query-intensive applications
Vertica has also nabbed some
former Oracle executives including Ray Lane and Jerry Held, but
most stunning of all Vertica claims to be 100x faster than
traditional databases:
"The company says its technology can be used to execute
queries 100 times faster than traditional row-oriented
relational database management systems."
Vertica claims that traditional relational databases have
problems with BI query speed:
- People can't analyze as much data as they need to, as fast
and as frequently as they need to, or in as many ways as they
would like
- Desperate for better query performance, row-oriented DBMS
customers spend tens of millions of dollars annually on stop-gap
measures such as adding DBA resources, creating and maintaining
OLAP cubes or replacing their DBMS with expensive, proprietary
data warehouse appliance hardware
Evidently, Vertica is designed for
data warehouse
type applications and they claim to be far faster than
traditional relational engines:
The Vertica Database gives more people the freedom to answer
more questions faster.
The column-oriented, grid-enabled Vertica Database offers
unmatched performance, scalability and flexibility for
real-time, read-intensive analytical applications in financial
services, telecommunications, retail, Internet, and government.
Compared with other database management solutions, the Vertica
Database
- Executes queries 100x faster than traditional
row-oriented RDBMS
- Runs on clusters and grids of inexpensive Linux hardware
- Is 20x faster and 70% less expensive than data
warehousing appliances
- Requires up to 90% less table storage space than
traditional RDBMS
- Has dramatically lower administrative overhead
Time will tell if Vertica presents a threat to traditional BI
systems.
