Billionaire Larry Ellison, the "Oracle of Oracle", made a cameo
appearance in the first five minutes of the latest hit movie "Iron
Man 2". They don't mention Ellison's name, his face
quickly appears in passing as Robert Downey Jr. says to Larry:
"Ah, it's the Oracle of Oracle".
And, in an inside joke that only a Oracle professional would
understand, the Iron Man character uses Oracle Enterprise Manager
(OEM) during one scene in his palatial Malibu mansion!
Unlike other billionaires who appear in
cameos for the camp value (Donald Trump),
it's refreshing to see a truly cool real
billionaire appear in a movie about a really
cool fictional billionaire!

In this age where
many software billionaires are
socially clueless dweebs who can't
find their own butts with both
hands, placing Larry Ellison in the
Iron Man 2 movie is
totally appropriate.
Larry
Ellison is the embodiment of the
Tony Stark character, a playboy of
untold wealth who has some of the
funnest toys in the world, including
one of the worlds largest Yachts
(The Rising Sun) and his own
personal fighter jet!. |
Here is Larry Ellison pulling some G's
in his personal F5 fighter:
Iron Man 2 has lots of product name
placement for Oracle and the grand finale
shows the fight scene under a giant geodesic
done with the glowing red neon "ORACLE"
logo.

Iron Man fights his nemesis under the Oracle
dome
In a sense, this movie genre is a re-make of the Howard Hughes movies
of the past, the reclusive unmarried playboy with a Brazilian
dollars and a passion for flyinhg.
Oracle is heavily marketing the movie, a smart marketing move to
make Oracle "cool" and promote Larry as the true high-tech
billionaire:

In a sense, Larry Ellison is the embodiment of the Tony Stark
character, and it's no accident that Oracle dominates the data
processing world. Ellison is a real visionary, anticipating
the needs of the database community and introducing features such as
parallel query a decade ahead of it's time.
If Larry Ellison is guilty of anything, it's being too far ahead
of the curve, as in the late 1990's when he introduced the "database
appliance", a revolutionary technology that is only now becoming a
reality in 2015.
