Jamaica Insider Travel Tips

Travel Tips by Burleson Consulting

Jamaica has long been misunderstood as a dangerous destination, partly due to the crime areas in Kingston.  However, for those staying in a resort, Jamaica is perfectly safe and you can still venture forth to see the mountain rain forests and agricultural areas.

Lush, fertile and tropical, the inland mountain areas grow fresh Nutmeg, Cocoa, Coco, as well as coconut, pineapple and Papaya.  Vendors sell ice-cold baby coconuts from the roadside, a wonderful treat, and make sure to try the wonderful exotic fruits such as Sour Sap.

For food, try the native Jamaica breakfasts of Aki and Salt Fish or liver.  For later meals, don’t miss the Manish Water soup and Jerk pork and jerk chicken.

Rastafarianism is a major religion in Jamaica and local Rasta’s use a medicinal herb called “Ganja” which is smoked as a part of their religious services.  A devout group, Rastas can be seen worshipping from any country roadside.  For an “anything goes” resort experience, the Hedonism (called Hedo by locals) resort is famous worldwide for accommodating any and every request.  Hedo also has an all-nude area for the sun worshippers.

The main tourist attractions include Dunn’s River falls where you can hike up the shallow waterfall, the Jamaican bobsled team training camp and the Bob Marley museum.
