Despite its reputation as one of the driest and hottest
place in earth, the Furnace Creek golf course offers a lush green respite, and
carries the distinction of being the world’s lowest golf course, settled-in at
218 feet below sea level.
Summer temperatures in Death Valley can reach in excess of
130 degrees, but in the winter months the climate is ideal, with cool breezes
and temperatures in the 60’s, perfect for golfing.
Their 19th hole
has a convenient golf cart ramp for fast service.
Furnace Creek is a beginner-friendly par 70 course, with
wide fairways and surprisingly, very few sand traps!
The pro shop is
well-stocked, and don’t forget a souvenir shirt or cap proclaiming that you have
played the lowest golf course on earth. Green fees are very reasonable, the
staff is friendly and it’s a very pleasant and unique golf experience.
Play tips:
While you won’t be needing your sand wedge, you will want
to bring a camera to snap pictures of the abundant native wildlife and the
amazing contrast of the lush fairways to the stark and barren mountains.

Crows and Ravens are abundant, and Coyotes roam freely
about the course (what your step for Coyote poo), and the ponds are full
of wild ducks, and the occasional Herron and roadrunner. |
If you are counting on high quality rental clubs, you may
want to bring your own weapons.
They say that ball travel is impeded below sea level and
that you should add two clubs to each shot to compensate the increased air
pressure. Personally, I did not notice any difference, but it makes a great
story . . . .
