ORA-00119 tips

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting
May 1, 2008

Problem: I am getting the following errors while starting up my database using the DBCA:

DBCA_PROGRESS : 2%
ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter LOCAL_LISTENER
ORA-00132: syntax error or unresolved network name 'LISTENER_DEVALLIP'
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters

ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter LOCAL_LISTENER
ORA-00132: syntax error or unresolved network name 'MYSID'

To troubleshoot it, I checked both my listener.ora and tnsnames.ora but could not find any error.

The content of listener.ora is:

# listener.ora Network Configuration File: /database/oracle10g/network/admin/listener.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = /database/oracle10g)
(PROGRAM = extproc)
)
)

LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC2))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server.sushmi.com)(PORT = 1522))
)
)

And the contents of tnsnames.ora are:

SANE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.0.10)(PORT = 1522))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =

(SERVICE_NAME = mysid)
)
)

EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC2))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = PLSExtProc)
(PRESENTATION = RO)
)
)

And in file 'initsane.ora' parameter I have:
LOCAL_LISTENER=MYSID

Solution:
You've only one listener i.e. LISTENER where MYSID is your service. Since you're using only one default listener you don't need to have local_listener set. Hence, you can remove the local_listener entry from your pfile/spfile initialization parameters and re-start your listener.

The documentation notes this on the ORA-00119 error:

ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter %s

Cause: The syntax for the specified parameter is incorrect.

Action: Refer to the Oracle Reference Manual for the correct syntax
